basilsageherb
Hello, very novice hen keeper here - we got a sneezy chicken (ex battery) in April. The vet saw her at the end of September and was unconcerned and didn't suggest any medicine. However, she died last night - can't help her now, but what do we do with the eggs we've collected over the last week? No way to know which ones are hers and which ones belong to the other 2 (we only have 3 hens - until last night of course!) My instinct is to dump them all, just in case. What do you all recommend? Thank you! B
Egluntyne
I'd go by your instincts as you probably won't enjoy them anyway. Some illnesses can affect the egg glands, but that isn't to say that the eggs will necessarily be infected. Medications can however be passed into the egg sometimes. Donna C
When we lost our ex-batts we couldn't bear to eat their eggs so threw them away. Waste i know but had to go with my instinct.
basilsageherb
Thank you - glad to hear you agree on the egg-dump! It is a waste, but I'd not be able to eat them, so will take your advice.
meezers
You could scramble the ggs up and feed hem back to the chooks- or to your dog, if you have one. Not so wasteful then.I've always eaten any eggs from deceased hens.
Chucky1
Meezers seems like a good half way house. I think I know how you feel, just seems such a shame to dump them after they went to all that effort. Sorry about your chook.
basilsageherb
It's more the health aspect - if the chicken was ill enough to die, then how contaminated are the eggs? And for how long? Anyway, decided to take advice, and fed them back to the remaining chickens! And then a kindly 'wise woman' delivered 2 more hens today! I now have 4 hens and the 2 new ones are HUGE! Thanks all!
