New Tent!

Recommended Posts

Hi all, After your experiences if possible!

We love camping, and while we don't go away as much as I would like, we still go several times a year. Our existing tent was a cheapy, which while is excellant value for money, is a bit drafty (tent doesn't reach the ground!) and not double lined in the main, so can be cold/hot depending. Has served us fine.

But our circumstances are now changing, and a little one is on the way. We both want to continue camping - if nothing else, it is cheaper than a hotel! But we recognise a better tent is called for, so we stand a chance of staying dry and warmer without a gale blowing through. And now, there are a number of clearance sales on - so would make sense to make the most of the opportunity.

So, any recomendations for a 5? sleeper tent (enough room to move/store stuff etc), of good quality, maybe with sewn in groundsheet? that is tall enough to stand in.

Congratulations on your news :D .

It's been a while since we bought our tent, we're a family of 5 and have one with 2 bedroom pod thingys and a large middle bit and porch area. It's fine and serves it's purpose but with 2 vertically challenged people it takes a while to put up. OH always wishes he'd got one of those Khyam (sp?) tents which practically pop up themselves - especially when it's peeing down with rain! Whenever we go away I tend to get tent  - always like the look of the Outwells, think they're pretty good all round.

Let us know how you get on - fingers crossed you get a bargain this time of year :D .

We got a new tent a couple of months ago, there are only 4 of us but we wanted lots of room so ended up with a 9 man  , it's a Vango Solanga 900 which we got of ebay from a company called Nearly New Tents which sell ex demo tents, ours was still sealed in it's original packaging with full warranty :D .

It is a very large tent with more than enough room and not too difficult to put up, the only down side is some sites might not be able to accommodate it on a single pitch, they also do the same tent in a 6 man.

We have an outwell vermont. IMHO outwell is the Rolls Royce of tents although we do get ribbed by our friends about our "marquee"!

Its a 5 man tent with two bedrooms, lounge area and front utility area at the front. All of it is full stand up height. We also have the carpet to go inside:lol: makes a huge difference to warmth. We get a lot of people asking questions and wanting to look when we use it but yes its pricey (shop around the net though we got a great deal)

I'd throughly recommend looking on UKcampsite website it has all the tent reviews and comments by users. Its a good forum for tips too... much like this one but specific to camping.

good luck

Definitely check on UKCampsite for reviews! Go for a bigger tent than you will need - when it's throwing down outside, you need a bit of space to be able to spread out a little inside, especially with children. A sewn in groundsheet is invaluable to exclude draughts!

I can't comment on the polyester tents as we have now gone back to canvas, but this time of year you should get a good deal. Your best bet would be to go somewhere like GoOutdoors and have a look around their tent displays at the different layouts. Whatever you do though, don't be tempted to buy an ex display! Have fun (I love buying tents - almost as much as buying chickens  )

Thanks all!

And yes, been looking at the UK Campsite website - great website!

Outwells do look good and have pretty good reviews on the websites (and compared to tents like Cabanons look like a good price!!), will have a look at the Vango's as well.

Want to get somewhere to see before I buy - if going to spend a reasonable amount of money, I don't want to make an expensive mistake...
