Margalot
Hi, I have 5 wonderful Brahmas, with Florence the Cockerel head of the flock, as you can tell by his name he wasn't an intended purchase, but the name suits him so we just couldn't change it ! the lady we got them from said they were hatched around the end of march this year, so that would put them at around 7 months, and to me they look quite mature now the girls faces reddening up and very plump lovely fat cuddly hens! but I wanted to know about their laying ability. I have read that because they are slow to mature that point of lay is about 30 weeks or even later. But I didnt know if I should expect eggs this year or not? i have also read that they carry on laying through the winter but dont know if this is true and that you should get an egg every other day. Even though they are young birds most of them had what seemed like a mini moult and have got new plumage. i must admit they are so beautiful, not skittish no feather pecking at each others bottoms, I am so glad I got these the are such gentle birds (but BIG!) ~I will have to post some photos of them as they are all different colours and Florence is growing his lovely neck plumage and looking more handsome every day. by the way I am not impatient for eggs as for me that was never the end goal, but my hubby ask every day "any eggs yet" and then shakes his head
Griffin
I think Bridget & Francesca were around 9/10 months before they laid. Now they're just like my Silkie, lay about 10 eggs then go broody Brahmas are great, I really love my cuddles with my big girls.
chick wiggle
My Sissy & Ada are 10 months old and are just laying on and off at the moment. I reckon yours should start laying any minute now, but with winter coming, could be longer, sorry . Ada has just decided to moult too Im gonna have to knit a scarf for the silly girl, fancy moulting now! But, they are the softest, cuddliest, most lovely girls ever, and i wouldnt give up my cuddles with them for anything.
Margalot
Thank you When Flo first crowed he was trying to tread all the hens and they were really avoiding him, i assume because they were not in lay and he was just getting his first rush of cockerel testosterone! After that he seemd to leave them alone and as I understand a cockerel only treads hens that are in lay? (how does he know?? )......Anyway this last week he is starting to do the flamenco dance around them and is taking quite an interest, although they are still giving hime the cold shoulder , and none are crouching yet. I didnt know whether they carried on laying through the colder months?? being a pure breed? As for going broody, i am going to have to re-read up on that! and prepare myself as I do not want to raise chicks and will have to snap them out of it (although maybe I could be persuaded?)
