Batleys mum
I have a Light Sussex who has a massive crop.I looked in my books and they recommended squirting olive oil into her beak, massaging it for 5 minutes then turning her upside down and trying to get her to bring it up.I tried this on 4 seperate occasions and without success.A neighbour who keeps chickens suggested i starve her for a day, which i did and the crop seemed to have emptied but yesterday she went back to normal rations and today her crop is again huge and feels solid.ANY SUGGESTIONS PLEASE? Thankyou in anticipation Wendy
Redwing
Dont try to make her bring it up - if the mass is too big to go down it isnt going to come up and it may cause problems if you try. Its the suggested treatment for sour crop not blocked crop Dosing with olive oil and then massaging the crop can sometimes break up the mass Some people recommend giving the hen live maggots to eat through the blockage (these can be obtained from fishing bait shops) Keep her on tiny or no rations for now or you'll just add to the problem but dont withdraw water completely
Egluntyne
Is her crop massive all the time, or does it go down overnight?
Batleys mum
Hi and thankyou.Would live mealworms do the same job as maggots?
Chucky Mama
No, it needs to be maggots I'm afraid
