Herbal Essences

Recommended Posts

I was just having a look on the web for Herbal Essences to see if you can still buy the original stuff not this horrible new stuff, only to read some horrible things about their testing on animals :( I must be naive but I didn't think companies were allowed to test cosmetic products on animals anymore

Won't be buying their stuff again :x

Unfortunately some misinformation has recently appeared which may have compromised your trust in Herbal Essences. Rather than trust wrong information here are the facts:

* Herbal Essences products are not tested on animals. Full stop. Nor do we ask any supplier or contract lab to test them on our behalf. All messages implying Herbal Essences or any other P&G Beauty product was tested on animals are a wrong!

I have just been reading this on the website http://www.pg.com/en_US/downloads/sustainability/pov/PG_Animal_Research_ENG.pdf and I think they do still test on animals. But they justify it by saying all companies have to in the initial stages.

But another document states

Animal Welfare Safety is an essential ingredient of all P&G products as P&G’s first priority is the safety of our consumers. All P&G products on the market have been evaluated through a comprehensive risk assessment.

P&G also cares about the welfare of animals. We have been able to reduce, refine, or replace animal testing because of our increased use of historical data, the increased sophistication of computer models, and the development of alternative research methods. Except where required by law, P&G no longer uses animals in evaluating the safety of our non-food, non-drug consumer products. We are committed to the ultimate elimination of laboratory testing using animals. The majority of the limited testing we carry out today is for drug and health care products. We are working to help gain the acceptance of alternatives by governments around the world and to eliminate the need for unnecessary regulatory testing.

So I don't know now :?

Sadly many companies do still test - cant think why - aren't there enough products on the market already? That said, there are increasing numbers who don't! Sainsburys and Tesco's own toiletries are cruelty free and so, I believe, are Simple products. I use Original Source - they do a variety of shower gels, shampoo and conditioner and soaps - all vegan, although they do have some SLS's . I just wish specialist veggie/cruelty free products weren't so expensive - choice is far too limited for those of us who don't want to use products containing animals or which have been tested on them :-(

Rant over!

If you want to be sure your cosmetics are cruelty-free, look out for the BUAV bunny logo on products. You can also find them on many cleaning products now, too.

The co-op are really good for this, as are many small, independent cosmetics companies such as Pure Nuff Stuff who only use natural ingredients in their products and are BUAV approved. Faith in Nature also have a no animal testing policy and, I think, are BUAV approved.
