katiew7103
Please can someone offer some advice. My chook has been broody for the last 5 weeks and things aren't improving. I have tried the dog cage scenario but each evening when she returns to the coop she just resumes her position on the nest. In the morning I have to remove her and put her back in the cage. I'm not sure if she should be staying in the cage overnight. She is eating and is otherwise well. Help!
coco
I think it is recommended that she stays in the cage overnight. Have you got somewhere safe and warm you could leave her.
katiew7103
Yes I have. I have just released her from the cage and she has rushed back to the nest. Right I'll try keeping her in the cage for 3 days solid (with a bit of respite when I am watching). Is that what you would recommend? Egluntyne
I wouldnt give her any respite at all as it will just undo all your patient work so far. Seems harsh, but it will be in her best interests if you harden your heart and leave her there for at least 3 days and 3 nights.
sparkysmum
Yes I have. I have just released her from the cage and she has rushed back to the nest. Right I'll try keeping her in the cage for 3 days solid (with a bit of respite when I am watching). Is that what you would recommend? I'm afraid I would do 3 days with no respite. Harsh I know but it is getting cold & damp & you don't want this to carry on. Can't be much fun being broody in the middle of winter Poor wee thing. Cruel to be kind Alli xx
katiew7103
Should i put the cage back in the run in the morning, she is in my garage at present.
sparkysmum
I would keep with the others so long as she is in a broody cage. That way she can still be around them & be part of the group. At night when the temperatures drop she needs some protection _ shed, porch, garage, etc. I might be tempted to go further & insulate the cage at night. Hope this is resolved quickly for you.
