Can the pecking order change??

Recommended Posts

I used to think that Gloria was top chook - always first for the juicest worms, always first in the kitchen to sit by the fridge, always out first in the morning.

But over the past few days Flo seems to have taken over on the above. When I kindly dug up some worms yesterday (I was told to assist them.....) Gloria just looked at me and moved out of the way and Flo was tucking into them, something she never usually does - she hasn't liked big worms in the past you see :doh:

Can the leader board change???

They are nearly 2 and we have had them for about 18 months.

Can anyone help please??? :o

Yes I think it can change. They are always looking for a sign of weakness in others to make the next step up the ladder. I think it usually happens when one dies, or you get new hens. Sometime it can happen when the top hen is moulting or a little below par.

Maybe Gloria has not been feeling herself and Flo has taken advantage?

Yeah, that could be it.

Blimey - it's complicated being a chook!

Both of them have banged out eggs this morning, so I am not complaining as I know some ladies have pulled their drawers up for winter, so I think everything is OK - they get on really well, and when one is in the nest box the other constantly calls for them. You learn sooo much on this forum :D

As already said, it could just be your top chook didn't feel up for worms. If she's showing no interest, then the others will rush in...

Toph is bigger and more "in your face", she's the loudest and quickest to try and get food...to a visitor, she looks like Top hen, but she's not....Suki is always the first out, she sits back and quietly watches...she can take food from Toph (but not vice versa)...and when we introduced the two new chooks (one hen, one young cockerel), it was Suki who was laying down the law.

However, we've just had a very dramatic shake up! As the winter has rushed in, we've had to speed up the introductions as our "intro" accommodation just isn't warm enough. So, we removed Suki from the Eglu at night and put her in a cardboard box in the conservatory, inserted the two newbies into the Eglu...and then in the morning, let Suki into the WIR before opening the Eglu.

...Suki's reign has been shaken! She's completely accepted Apple (the new hen) ...more than that, Apple now defends her food or tried to steal Suki's!! Toph is the one ruffling her feathers indignantly and defending her favourite treats....she's the one giving Oscar (cockerel) a hard time....it's HER Eglu now.

Hen politics... :doh::roll:
