beach chick Posted December 2, 2010 Share Posted December 2, 2010 Ditto has been a bit off colour for a few days, but this morning was very hunched and kept putting her head under her wing. sorry, this is a bit long, but need some advice please! I've brought her indoors and she is now in a cat box in the laundry room (cat box not ideal for an orp, need to find something a bit bigger). I found some Baytril, so have given her a dose of that and also syringed some water into her and given her some tuna (which I think she has pecked at). She is very very thin, although she has been eating and drinking normally with the others. the last time I picked her up was just over a week ago, when I frontlined them, and I noticed then she was a bit light - but she's obviously lost a lot since then. we are snowed in here, so cant get to the vets or chemist. dont have any nutridrops or rescue remedy. was considering making a very liquid mash of pellets and syringing some of that into her if she wont eat normally. we do have some metacam as well, but I dont know whether to give her that or not - she doesnt seem in pain, but then chooks often dont show it. she must be coming up for 2 years, and came from a place we later found out had mycoplasma, so I'm wondering if that has reared its head again. anything else I can do? - judging by the weather forecast we may well be stuck here for a while... beach chick Posted December 2, 2010 Author Share Posted December 2, 2010 thanks plum - I gave her 2 drops in about 20ml at mid-day, so will give her some more in a bit. she has eaten some tuna garnished with mealworms so that's good, and seems a bit brighter in herself. I think Iwill keep her in for a few days - she's now in the kitchen, in the tortoise cage draped with a blanket to give her some peace and quiet. dog and cats fascinated!! I'll give her some more baytril later; she's eaten some pellet mash enriched with the tuna/mealworm garnish and a bit of grated cheese. she's sleeping at the mo and seems quite happy. slightly concerned she seems to have only poo-ed once since this morning - which was runny, and her backside is a bit messy. on the other hand, at least the kitchen doesnt smell too bad!! Or at least till you CAN get out.... she might have got weak with the weather. some TLC and extra food along side baytril might sort her. beach chick Posted December 3, 2010 Author Share Posted December 3, 2010 she's eating like a horse! still a bit hunched up, but I wouldnt say was going to peg it at this stage. we got into town today, so I went to see the vet, but of course he wouldnt give us anything til he'd seen her. having been in and out once, didnt want to risk it again as the roads are terrible here. I have just about enough to see us through til Mon, so hoping the combination of food/warmth/Baytril will keep her going til then. what does anyone think about giving her some metacam? The thing is Monday will only be 5 days of baytril which is probably not enough??? Though It hopefully if an infection is enough to "keep her going" and you might find it starts to work and she perks up, but you will still need to see the vet. to get her some more. to complete a course. Metacam would depend on what it is that is wrong with her. One of my vets does not like them having metacam the same time as Baytril. the other says ok. You also need the correct dose for her weight. I will be surprised if you get many answers for legal reasons. as it is a POM . However I am prepared to say that in your snow bound situation personally I probably would do as you are. and inacase it was say a lash on the way I would give mine Metacam, althoufgh personally both my vETS would advise me over the phone!!! I have not given metacam yet, as not sure she is in pain - altho unwell. think I wont give it unless she seems to get worse. I will take her to the vet on Mon, assuming we can get out again - weather has worsened here. I have enough baytril to get her through to sun night, and I am pretty sure it's mycoplasma rearing its ugly head - if she'd been ill enough, I'd have taken her before, but she was ok (or ok enough to be a worry) mon/tues - and we've been snowed in since weds morning! Long as you are not sticking her straight out iNn the freezing temps she will adjust later if she gets better. All mine are in Most of the time despite having fully enclosed and heated run!!! course opinions will differ, and I know i am potty My girls are all ex bat, so yes she was damaged a lot actually, multiple breaks!!!! but I have one coming up Monday for here 2 year henniversary of release!!! and the one telling you about is 4 years old!!! beach chick Posted December 5, 2010 Author Share Posted December 5, 2010 she still seems quite poorly, after the initial boost. have brought her back indoors, as the porch is so cold and the towels/picnic rug I put over the cage felt damp. she's a bit brighter indoors and at least is not using her energy on keeping warm. Vet tomorrow or poss tues, not sure the chicken vet is in on a monday. for now I am keeping on with the baytril, will see what the morning brings.
