green
If it's dark brown, it's probably the Maran, if light brown, then the Light Sussex. If in doubt, keep an eye on the chooks and you will figure it out in a few days. Congrats on another first!
meezers
I'm betting it's the Maran. My Light Sussexs eggs are pinky beige with white speckles. The Marans eggs may get darker when she gets into the swing of laying.

catherinedon
definatly have 4 layers as today was the first day I had 4 eggs but havent been around enough to check out whose laying the new 2. cant wait to figure it out
catherinedon
clever people you are yes the dark brown egg was indeed layed by Rose the Maran as I saw her today. THe other new egg is cream with white spots so im guessing thats TESS the light sussex its so lovely to be getting some more eggs
green
Another mystery solved! If you're getting three or four eggs most days, you'll have plenty to give away as Christmas pressies. I've been looking forward to that, but as I only got one laying hen, I might have to fill the egg boxes partly with easter eggs.
bevmatt
To check as well if a hen is in lay - place your fingers between her pelvic bones and if you can get two fingers width between them she is laying - if not she has not come into lay yet. catherinedon
Bevmatt I did that yest and the 2 who are not laying I can only get 2 fingers width but the layers I can get 3 and 3 on Tess so it must be her
