Anyone tried wood pellets in an eglu run?

Recommended Posts

It is nearly impossible for me to get hold of woodchip to put in my eglu (classic) run. This is probably an incredibly dim question but I wondered if the wood pellets you can buy for stoves etc (or even the wood pellets sold as cat litter) would be suitable to put in, has anyone tried it, or am I just being totally stupid (please feel free to say!). I'm tempted to get a bag and try it out, but wonder if the chucks would try to eat it?

My run is covered on the top and one side by a tarp, but I don't think that would keep it dry enough for me to use rapasorb (rape straw type of aubiose), or would it?

Any suggestions gratefully received!!

Thanks

I've used wood pellets, a couple of different brands, for the stables. It was okay but in dry weather in particular, the stables got very dusty when being swept. So once they were used up I didn't buy anymore. One of my horses has a dust allergy and I didn't want to breathe the dust either. I haven't used for the chickens though.

I got my woodchip from B&Q. I couldn't find it in all of the stores though so I used the buy and reserve option online to see which store had it in stock. 'B&Q Hardwood Chips Natural 56L'

Thank you! That's where I used to get my wood chip from, it's a 50mile roundtrip for me to get to the nearest big B&Q that stocks this so I always checked they had it in stock before I went. I was then very annoyed to find that one time I did this yes, they had it in stock, but they couldn't access it without a fork-lift truck and there was no one to do that on the day I went so I couldn't buy any, v long story, but I don't think I'll be doing it again, just in case!!!

That's a shame. I 'reserved' the first time I picked up the woodchip but when I got there it hadn't been reserved for me. :eh: We waited 15mins for someone to bring us the woodchip, no explanation. We didn't bother reserving the second time! Is it expensive to have it delivered?

I'd wondered about delivery, but having looked at the website, it doesn't look as though it's available for home delivery, I guess it's too cheap relative to it's size and weight to make it worthwhile for them? :?

As Chestnut Mare said, I found that in the dry weather that the stables were so dusty and in an even more confined, covered area I can imagine the dust would be terrible.

FlytesoFancy do a fantastic bag of hard wood chips for £9 ish and delivery isn't too bad at all, extremely quick as well :)
