Sageandonion
We've had our 3 girls since Sunday and have been giving them 12 oz of layers pellets that they don't get through in a day. They've also had some corn a couple of afternoons and the odd grape now and again. Just wondering treat wise what is best for them and how much is too much. E.g how many grapes can they have? I've noticed people leave greens hanging up in the run - would this be on a daily basis and is there any greens they can't have? I've read they shouldn't have meat and potato peelings I think but is there anything else which is a no no? Thank you Edited January 13, 2011 by Guest
Ain't Nobody Here
Here's a list of food they can and can't eat. I give my girls a small tubful of corn and chopped up cabbage late in the day. They don't get much else in the way of treats apart from the occasional apple core or strawberry tops. I'll occasionally give them a corn on the cob or sprout tree. I think perhaps I'm quite mean . Sageandonion
Thanks ANH that's great - don't think I'm going too wrong then . Re the list of treats - think the hens will have to fight the kids off for the custard creams .
gongladosh
if we give ours grapes, we limit them to 5 or 6 grapes each. It's harder than it looks, as ours initially tried to eat theirs, and due to the amounts of grapes being stolen, the have all ended up swallowing them whole! Mine also love blueberries (again, 5 or 6 each) - if you give them too much, you get blue poo that's rather runny.
gongladosh
there's also cabbage - ours will eat it but only under protest (or when they can't see is watching), they'd much rather have other treats. Oh, and if you're trying to re-seed any part of your lawn, hens like eating grass seed! (as you'd guess, I only use seed without any added chemicals)
Sageandonion
Thank you - must say they do seem to love the grapes, they will have a good supply come the summer as we have a grape vine right near their run. Is there a weight watchers chicken club ? May have to give the blueberries a miss for a while not sure I can "do" blue runny poo ?
