That's what I thought too, Egluntyne. I really enjoyed this series (even though I can no longer watch Anne Reid and see her as anything but Vera in Ladies of Letters). Did they ever explain what happened to Ruth's husband after they left Marchlands? If so, I missed it. I was a young Mum in the 80's too and wore exactly the same dungarees as Alex Kingston.
