Chortle Chook
Thank you everyone, you have all made me feel better...I was getting a bit scared only reading negative stuff, oh well one month to go... Don't be put off by those disgusting ailments and revolting pictures of sick hens, worms etc. in the books and on vet websites - Think of all the ailments dogs and cats and even hammies and bunnies could get. As with any pet there are loads of nasties out there but you are most unlikely to meet the majority if any of them providing you buy from a good source, keep your chooks clean and feed them nice food. I think that a lot of the advice on ailments is really for people who keep loads and loads.
chickyhazel
If there's one thing I could also add, it's that they're generally much more intelligent than you'd think - there's more going on up top than you would expect. Intelligent? Chickens? I have never seen a dafter animnal, but that's what makes them so enetertaining
