Mollie333
I candled a few eggs today. What am i meant to be looking for exactly? I can see a dark shaded area going to half-way on the bantams, and a air sac at the blunt end of the egg.. My last hatch of Light Sussex, last year, i could see viens earlier than day 8. Is it a problem that i'm not seeing veins yet? Thanks.
bevmatt
It sounds to me as though they are all infertile. The dark mass you can see is probably the yolk. It is still quite early in the season so they could be all infetile.
craftyhunnypie
Not necessarily! Sometimes the chicks are more developed than they should be & veins can't be seen. If when candling a small dark blob floats into view within the darkish mass then usually that is the peep. An infertile egg has a sort of floaty yolk within the mass & usually looks grainy. Candle a definite infertile egg to compare. I don't always see veins so don't despair. Emma.x

Guest
I have RIR eggs in the incubator and most of the eggs are brown there are only a few that I can see the veins on all of the others have a dark shodow with a very dark spot usually in the middle towards the air pocket at the widest side of the egg. I read so much on candling and ended up so confused, some people candle eggs once some on a daily basis. I decided that I would candle my eggs on day 5, day 10 and day 15. That way any changes would be noticable. I hope your eggs are okay but don't toss any away yet as there are many reasons you may not be able to see the veins. Just keep an eye out for any eggs going bad. I read about someone who accidently had the heat in the incubator up at 106F but kept the eggs for the full incubation period. The day after the incubation period was up they were taking the eggs out to dispose of them only to find one of the eggs hatching! So never be too quick to dissmiss them and through them out, nature works in some strange ways. Good luck. X
