JanTheDiver
As some of you may have read, we lost Ginger on Monday to a prolapse, she was one of a pair of RIR's that we bought together in August 2009. They used to do everything together, eating, pecking and taking a daily stroll around the playpen. Now Ginger has gone Carrot seems to be pining for her, she has gone off lay, seems to stand/sit where I had Ginger in the cage before she she went and just doesn't seem totally herself. She is eating OK and is vocal, but not as much as she normally is. Can they pine for lost friend, if so does it take them long to get over the missing one? gongladosh
yes, one of ours did when she lost her best friend. Some hens seem to have 'soul mates' - when their friend dies, they're gutted. She'll need extra cuddles and love and in time she'll start to move on. Sorry to hear about Ginger by the way.
Tweety
Sorry to hear that you have lost Ginger. If the reports in the papers recently are anything to go by, chickens do have feelings ( something we could have told them without having to do too much research!) so Carrot may well be missing her friend. The important thing is that she is not a lone hen. I hope she perks up soon.
