The Works - all credit to them

Recommended Posts

You probably have an outlet of The Works on your high street - discount book and crafts store. Rosie went to our local one the other week to nab some books on their 3 for £6 deal, she'd read her way through two of the books and started on the last... a novel with a Billie Piper lookalike on the cover and called Rock Chicks. She put it down in disgust - the book was VERY explicit!!!!!

I had a look and it made even my hair curl and I'm no prude! I took it back to the store today, expecting a battle and difficulties, prepared to stand my ground. I pointed out to the manager that Rosie (she was then still 12 years old) had picked it up from the children's section, without really looking at it, to add to the two books she'd really wanted to get on the deal. I can understand that someone might have moved it to the wrong section, but how could their check out staff have missed the big 'EXPLICIT' printed above the bar code??!

To give him his credit, he was very apologetic and refunded me the price of the book. He also moved all the stocks to a higher shelf in the adult section and said that he'd talk to his staff about watching out for that sort of thing. I pointed out that perhaps these books ought to have a removable sticker on the front explaining that they are adult only fiction. I know that she reads way above her chronological age but that doesn't mean that she needs to be exposed to that sort of material.

I shall be emailing the company to commend the manager's actions and asking for some staff training in the matter.

Good on them for acting on it. Reminds me of going to Oxfam last year where I had to point out that The Commitments by Roddy Doyle was in fact adult and not children's fiction  I've seen several books in charity shops that have been put in the wrong section. Quite good if you are an adult and its a book you've been after as the kids books are usually £2 cheaper than the adults.
