Croad Langshan

Recommended Posts

My goodness - yesterday we went up to Yorkshire to buy two of these. Today they have been the perfect zen chickens. One black, one white - quite large with lovely u-shaped bodies and eyes like beady teddy bear's eyes. They have eaten, drunk, scratched around in their segregated section of our aviary. I have picked them both up and cuddled them - not much resistance. They are quiet.

My girls on the other hand, have screamed and squawked for the WHOLE day. At 6am we had to put them in the shed with food and water because we were worried about the neighbours.

But what a lovely breed. I am in love!!

Thanks to the very lovely Shelley Rogerson, Chairwoman of the Croad Society and from whom we bought them.

I know I know....must get my act together.

We are going to have some pretty eggs - our speckled sussex lays china white ones and our light sussex does a deep brown. Apparently the white doesn't lay a plum egg but of course the black will. So probably four different coloured eggs - our first present probably to our poor neighbours!

Shelley is the Farm Manager at Temple Newsam in Leeds, of whom i've posted about before. She's FAB, isn't she? She knows her Croads and they are so lovely! she usually sells a few at the York Rare Breeds Auction too - a chance to pick up really good quality birds.

Another very important point about Shelley - for all the nay-sayers out there - She LOVES Naked Necks too! (i'm talking to you PLUM!)

Shelley is so lovely - such an animal person.

Second day of introductions and lots of squawking this morning. But I went out this morning with the two groups segregated by wire. They seem calmer now and our old girls keep eyeballing the new girls but they look quite keen.

We are not going to rush things but today we got eggs from everyone!
