Too much noise

Recommended Posts

Hi,

I have now got my 5 trained in the morning and they no longer scream for food or treats.

However at 0745 on Sunday 3 of them wanted to get into the Cube to lay - what a racket!!!!

Tried everything including holding their beaks shut but could not sort them!!!!

Have tried an extra box in the roosting area with straw in but they dont want to use that.

Any ideas - neighbours have never complained - but wouldnt blame them if they started.

Mine really squark if they go and lay in the wrong order. I know the nest box is supposed to fit 3 which is fine when your girls don't mind a bit of company whilst contemplating but mine object in the loudest possible terms. I think my neighbours must wonder if I wear anything other than jimjams when they're laughing behind their net curtains.

I've also noticed that they shout though the larger ventilation gap on the side as they can peer out too. I try all sorts to quieten them down, haven't tried the beak thing though.

My secret re their training programme is:

1 - They are let out at the first sound of noise (was 0630 now thankfully with the clock change 0730)

2 - I leave them in their WIR with 2 small bowls of treats and a dish of corn (mine have always refused to touch layers pellets)

3 - About 15 minutes later they want out of the run so we go down the garden where they have a small handful of meal worms

After that I leave them alone, feed the rest of the household and get ready for work. They keep quiet have a preening session and generally behave!!!

This routine is working and everyone seems to understand it!!

Hi

My first time writing on here, a bit rusty so please excuse me if I look like I don't know what I am doing because really I don't lol! but was looking through peoples comments about too much noise. I have been an eglu owner for six years now and have had a few chickens come and go and each to their own, they all have different personalitys and yes are very noisey first thing on a morning, I too have been out in my pjs many a time, hair all over the place trying to keep them quiet but to them I will just be saying blah blah blah blah. The reason why I am writing in is because the other morning me and my husband heard a strange noise outside, at first we thought it was some kind of bird of prey making a strange calling noise, I jumped up and looked out of the window only to see my chicken Blanche flapping her wings sticking her chest out and making this perculiar noise, has anyone had a hen do this before or is mine a one off? in all of my six years this is a first. *Hope I have passed my first test!*

I've noticed this morning that one of my girls is soooo noisy in the nest that I can hear her with all the doors and windows shut! Hubby wondered if she needed some vaseline to help her out :lol:GNR tended to just mind her own business when all this happened, and she was sunning herself clearly after an early tan! Is it normal for them to make such a loud noise? To be honest I thought she was being butchered, frightened the life out of me :(

Wow! so my girl thinks shes a cockerel, she is the biggest hen, I always thought my smallest hen little binnie ruled the roost, you learn something every day, watch out girls lol! speak of the devil there is one of them paparking now, that is chicken language as everyone knows.

Getting used to this forum just got to find out how to get smileys working and I will be sorted. Its really nice to get a reply, thanks old speckled hen.

It's not just the noise...lots of different noises from hens laying. My egg announcements are all different and I can tell which hen it is. In the absence of a cockerel the top hen takes that role. Since Flash came all is quiet really but I did spot one of the hens doing the flying upright legs out bit with him once, at that time she was having nothing to do with him. She is his second favourite and I have spotted her straddling the bottom hen. No hens got straddled before he came so perhaps she is copying his dominance.
