Henergy
It appears that my two (have had for 3 weeks now) love to sleep in the nestboxes rather than the perches. Well, I suppose it doesn't really matter. The problem is that they therefore poo in the nest boxes too. I have a wooden coop with a removable tray in the perch area, but there is hardly ever poo there. All the poo is in the nest box which only has a wooden floor & so harder to clean. I pick it all up each morning as I don't want pooey eggs !! Is this a 'normal' situation to be in ?
Sammiboo
to stop them going in the nest box to sleep you have put a upturned flower pot. to be honest ihave let mine sleep in there but they have got out the habit and they dont sleep in there at all. They did it when i first got them but 5 weeks later they are all on the perching bars
Henergy
to stop them going in the nest box to sleep you have put a upturned flower pot. Thats a good idea, but won't they get upset (I'm too soft ) ?
Sammiboo
no they will be fine - give it a try and see how you get on. They will get away with what you let them get away with. just make sure you take the pot out in the morning so they can use the next box for what its supposed to be for
Sam
to stop them going in the nest box to sleep you have put a upturned flower pot. Thats a good idea, but won't they get upset (I'm too soft ) ? We did that, one morning it was kicked out and an egg was in the nest box!! But kept doing it and I got up early so they hadn't already laid. They weren't upset, kind of like "oh... theres a plant pot there, i'll just settle here" She didn't seem too upset Oh and eggs are nice an clean now
Barkisland
I've realised mine will sleep in the nest box if it's cold, but they stop doing it as soon as the weather warms up a bit.
Sammiboo
one of the amberlinks likes to sit in the "doorway" of the nest box bum end in the main area and front looking in the nest box. The eggs are so much cleaner now they stay in the perch area
Henergy
So, Operation Flowerpot has started today - just been out & put a flowerpot in each nest box - so they will get a shock tonight when they find them there. DH thinks I am being really cruel, but as I said, its the fact that all the poo is going to soon rot the bottom of the wooden nestbox - the proper poo tray is in the perch area. (Of course I could always just let the wooden one rot & then get an Eglu !!!! )
chuckmum6
I'm won't allow pooing in the nest box, I have spare roosting bars that I use to block up the nest box this keeps them where they should be!
