TheFeatheredFiend
Yesterday the OH noticed that Diva was shaking her head a bit and on closer examination saw that she's got foam in the corner of both eyes and a very occasional barking cough. Her eyes are otherwise clear, there's no wheeze and her nostrils are clean. She's eating well seems content and her poo is normal. A quick call to our local vet got us an appointment within an hour so off we toddled with poor Diva to see the chickendoctor. The Vet confirmed a mild sinus infection, most likely Mycoplasma, and prescribed a course of antibiotics to be given in the water to treat the whole flock. I expected to get good old Baytril but was instead given Linco-Spectin which contains two different antibiotics specifically aimed at mycoplasma in poultry (and pigs!) So no eggs for a fortnight for us. Boo.
The Dogmother
Lovely photo and good that you got a quick diagnosis
TheFeatheredFiend
Yes, caught it nice and early. The Vet says it should clear up within a few days. Thanks for the comment on the photo, it was hard enough to get! Why do chickens always turn their heads just at the last moment as the shutter clicks? TheFeatheredFiend
Day three of the treatment and the foamy eyes are still there but the cough has all but disappeared. Still hoping for a full recovery!
The Dogmother
Good news, keep it up and be sure to give plenty of probiotics in the water or wet mash to keep their gut healthy.
