Puking Chicken

Recommended Posts

Hi everyone,

This is my first attempt at using the Forum.

I am (unashamedly) hoping to use all your knowledge that has been gathered over the years.

One of my three-year old Pepperpots has developed an unusual set of symptoms - well. they are unusual to me. Within the past week or so she has started to hide herself away under a tree and seems to be off her food. Unusually she has not produced any eggs and has been ignoring the treats she and her sisters have been given. However, there are no signs of her being broody. She has not taken herself off to the nesting box, her comb is bright red, it is erect, her eyes are bright but she is lethargic. The most upsetting symptom made its appearance yesterday. When she was picked up (and all our ladies enjoy being picked up) she suddenly started to puke up a clear runny liquid. I could not believe so much liquid could come from such a small body! Despite this behavior she did not seem distressed by the experience - which cannot be said for her owner!

Has anyone an idea what may be ailing this lady?

HI, Egluntyne,

Thank you for your concern. I have been conferring with the Domestic Authority and can confirm that our member of the Feathered Taliban (FT) is back on form. She is now eating corn again and has joined her sisters in their on-going campaign to turn the bottom of our garden into a mini-Passendale.

Our next project is to persuade them to start laying eggs again or at least in reasonable numbers. Being new to the game we are surprised that production has slowed even before the FT have reached the age of three. Does that make sense? Is this usual?
