Taking chickens abroad

Recommended Posts

Hi

Can anyone advise me please if it is legal to take your pet chickens abroad. We live on the Continent and cannot get certain breeds and I'd love to be able to pick some up in the Uk and bring them here. I asked the Ministry and they sent loads of official information but it was all about poultry for commercial use etc. I just want a few more chooks and they are not for any kind of commercial use! I am also so inspired by all of you who rehome ex-batts and I'd love to do that - we don't have batts where I live (which is great, actually) but I would happily offer a home to some British ex-batts!

Thanks for any help!

Certainly for hatching eggs there are some rules, I'll see if I can dig them out

I know that UK visitors to chicken shows on the continent can purchase birds at the shows and bring them back to the UK but it does involve some vet checks and paperwork - I would imagine a similar thing would apply from UK to the continent

Thanks guys. :)

Redwing - that is very interesting. I think I might email some chicken show organisers and maybe they can help me.

JellyKelly - I've actually just found a breeder who will sell one-day old Australorp chicks but I really don't want any boys and so really wanted to buy hens.

Hopefully I'll work out a way to get some hens back here!
