Just been and put them away and found this next to the run.

 

 

 

 

 

Is this normal? It looks as if shes tried to create another egg.. around an already formed egg.

 

I'm starting to think shes not alright because shes laid funny eggs before (double yolkers with 1 yolk formed, the other not, massive double yolkers, tiny tiny eggs..)

looks like one caught up the previous, funny as I was going to post my ex bats often make that type of noise when on the nest and egg on the way. hopefully just a blip

Odd and irregular eggs are common when they first start laying, but it sounds as if your hen has been laying for a while now.

 

If that is the case, then you can take her to the vet, but I'd be tempted to try something else first - get her to stop laying and see if she kick starts and is normal afterwards. You will need to starve her of food and water for 24 hours and keep her in the dark, then introduce water with some nutrients in it - Avipro or Life-Guard are good. After 36 hours, start her back on solids, but not layers feed - give her growers or plain wheat. Follow this treatment for 10 days and see if you can get her to stop laying (limiting her exposure to daylight will help), see how it goes and then gradually get her back onto layers feed and see if she comes back into lay again.

 

This sometimes works quite well and costs nowt, so is worth a try. I suggested the same today to a lady whose new hen is laying two eggs per day - one normal and one soft; she is obviously over-producing ova. I'm not sure if it will work for her bird as it may well just have malfunctioning egg tackle and therefore it wouldn't be worth pursuing.

I think I shall do this apposed to the broody case, it seems as if it will do her a lot more good. We have an old rabbit hutch in the garage, but it has no run. I'd say its about the same size as the cube, would that be okay to keep her in or would she need a run? Got plenty of wood & mesh in the garage so it shouldnt be a problem to knock a little one up for her. I will probably worm them all first then go about setting her alone. I agree it's definantly worth a try for her sake and because I give her eggs away Thanks for all the advice!!

 

 

Actually, I can get hold of a mahoosive dog crate (used for traveling them abroad) and I think that would be much better.
