Tooth removal advice please

Recommended Posts

Sorry to have to ask this health dental question but I had an upper molar removed the hole is huge a week later and I am sure I can see the back molars root in the socket but a bit of a clot too. The last stitch just came away. I keep reading about dry sockets but apparently that is more common on the bottom.

Is the big crater  in my upper gum normal and how long will it take to heal up. Sorry to have to ask this but its a week on and perhaps I am hoping for it to heal up a bit quicker and am being very impatient! It seems quite deep and I have just got the mirror and torch to have an investigation, dont worry I wont post any gory pictures!

Has anyone else had this? thank you donald

Thanks for the replies, I suppose thats one thing I am not in pain which hopefully should mean it is healing up. I had an abscess a year after root canal etc and my dentist wouldnt give me any antibiotics over a weekend, ended up climbing the walls and in A& E out of hours GP who did give me antibiotics but that took two days to kick in. I then end up with an extraction and I suppose I didnt trust my dentist very much..lost faith in them. I never complained re not being able to get any antibiotics(I was told they were too busy and that I would have to ring the out of hours etc) plus I seemed to be paying £16 here and there etc. But I then got a form to fill in about whether I was happy with my current treatment? I am debating as to filling it out. I am sure they try to see as many as they can to get more money etc

So I looked and have this wacking hole despite having stitches etc it looks quite deep. Dry socket I am reading is painful so that is one symptom I dont have thankfully. Feel very run down though.

But thank you, I thought it would be more healed over. Just was worried it would be my luck to have more problems Cheers what a topic for a Saturday night! :)

Hope it's feeling better today,

I've worked in "dental" for over 20 years now and what you're experiencing is normal, if the socket was "dry" then the pain is unbearable. Take the advice already given about mouthwashing etc and don't be over vigorous.

Thing is that everything you can feel inside your mouth feels bigger than it actually is, your tongue kind of magnifies it!

I had a tooth removed last year after a failed crown and can remember how "huge" it felt, you should really take it easy for a couple of days, I assume your dentist gave you post-op leaflet

Thanks so much for the responses, I had such a bad time climbing the walls with an abscess one weekend that I thought just my luck this has not worked properly. But its reasurring to have some responses, as I started to think I had a dry socket but fortunately compared to the abscess the discomfort has been more sore and inconvenient really!

I think after a load of metronidazole I feel so run down and not 100%. I alwasy feel washed out once antibiotics stop, I think the interfere with your immune system as well.(Well thats my theory anyhow)!

But I feel more reassured so thanks guys I knew I would get some answers here

cheers Donald :)
