Aunty e
So kitten is still with us, and still without name. He's six weeks old and as far as I can see, isn't eating solids, not even trying them, yet. Mum still has tons of milk, and feeds him quite a lot, but I can't seem to get him interested in dry food or wet food, and I'm a bit worried. He licks stuff a LOT, Minnie's last litter were quite licky kittens too, and is bright and playful. Should I just let him get on with it in his own time? All the cats are on kitten dry food at the moment to try and build them up a bit, but I've had to put off Minnie's spey, as she's obviously not going to have weaned him by next week
Fran A
I keep Siamese and Oriental cats. I start to wean them from 4 weeks onwards. I always start them on scrambled egg mixed with a small amount of evap milk (dilute it a little with boiled water) try rubbing his nose in it, if he still won't eat then put a little in his mouth. Evap milk is just too tasty to resist Good luck!
beach chick
if you are weaning onto dry food, it can be a hard transition. try mixing warm (previously boiled) water with the kibble to make a porridge consistency - wetter at first, then gradually less water til none at all. as said before, actually smearing some onto his lips should help too. Aunty e
No luck with trying egg, he won't go near the cat milk formula (although all the other cats hoover it up, so not a waste), but he has started mouthing the dried food so I'm hoping he'll make the transition soon. Off to get his jabs next week then off to his new home the week after so long as he's eating (I'm letting them take care of the second batch of jabs as they're responsible types). I have to say that speying is a lot more hassle than the last time I had one of my queens done - took two in last week, and the vet recommended side incisions (always had them go through the tummy) and both girls have really big wounds and one of them is now slightly infected and they're both terribly depressed Vet says they're fine, but I don't remember it being this bad at all, even when Cleo had her c section spey. beach chick
have you dried wetting the dry food auntye? it usually works a treat - lappable upable (?!) at first, then gradually using less and less water... not heard that about spaying, but my girl is nearly 10 now and we've only had boy cats since. Lewis
Not sure what age is best but if you wean too early (or sometimes too late) it can have effects on the behaviour and physiology of animals. Think the suggestion of slowly weaning by adding a bit of water and then reducing it, sounds good
Aunty e
Still not eating solid food. Sigh. Seems pretty healthy, but does have very pale gums. Will ask vet about it when he has his jabs next week.
Old Speckled Hen
Try s"Ooops, word censored!"ed beef. Freeze a bit of steak(yes sorry about that but you can then go on to mince)then get a sharp knife to s"Ooops, word censored!"e it...a boning knife is ideal... That way you get really fine meat your little kitty can suck up PS don't, in the early stages, try shortcuts like the food processor......it wont process the stringy bits and that would put the little chap off the food

Aunty e
That's ok! He's absolutely fine, cracking on with the solid food, off to get his jabs and then off to a new home sharpish Never did name him in the end, but he responds to Kitten pretty well.
