counturchickens
Hi, thought was going to post good news today as CJ with the impacted crop lots better, thanks to the forum! However, been out today and when we got back daisy older ex batt very quiet. Has something providing from vent. Looks like a piece of straw, but is attached. Thought might be a prolapse, but doesn't look like the pictures any ideas?
Egluntyne
It could be the membranes attached to a soft egg. I'd grab her and have a closer look.
counturchickens
Egluntyne, you are a star, spot on. Gave her a bath, and gently pulled and a softie came out. Just about to give her some porridge with limestone flour added. Thank you so so much.
Chucky Mama
If she is laying softies it is really important to give her mash or pellets which will have all the nutrients she needs to make a decent shell. Don't go over the top supplementing her with calcium as softies are not always calcium related Limestone flour is best given with a little cod liver oil which helps the absorption. I would stop all treats other than fresh green leaves and stick to layers pellets and/or mash. Flubenvet worming is a good idea if they haven't been done in the last 3-4 months. counturchickens
Thanks, I will take your advice. I have ordered some more ex batts pellets and mash.

Stevie Adams
This certainly does sound like a problem I am having with mine - I put a bit of lubricant around her and it seemed to relieve her for a bit - but if I pull on the bit hanging out, will it not hurt her? It seems as though it's attached inside!
The Dogmother
Thanks, I will take your advice. I have ordered some more ex batts pellets and mash. This flagged up with me... are you feeding her the smallholder ex-batt feed? If you are, can I recommend that you cut it 50/50 with regular layers pellets or feed. This ex-batt feed seems to cause softies in some hens, no idea why. Stevie, I have replied to you in your other thread
Stevie Adams
Just to say in the last half hour I've had to endure the experience of pulling a soft shelled egg from my little girl. It was a bit of a traumatic experience but thanks to this post, I was able to work out what the problem was. Hopefully our girls will be okay from now on
counturchickens
Thanks claret. Will try some different pellets too. Daisy of the post is still laying some softies, I had put it down to age as we've had her a year, and she is an ex batt. Don't mind no eggs, just want her to be as happy as she can in her retirement. The Dogmother
Both those elements can be a factor, she could have an exhausted shell gland, but try changing the feed first.
