Suprelorin implant - how long did yours last?

Recommended Posts

I know a few people on here have hens with Suprelorin implants and wondered how long on average they lasted you? I was a bit shocked to find after only 5 weeks, Roxy has laid again!! And yes, it was a soft egg :(

She laid the following day too (yesterday) but this one was normal. Still waiting to see what happens today....

I know the implant is new and experimental when it comes to use in hens but I was rather hoping for more than 5 weeks reprieve!! I can't bear to think about Roxy going through the stress again of repeat visits to the vets to have stuck egg shells removed. I really thought this problem was fixed for 6 months or so... :(

yes 6 to 8 months would be expected.

I have had 3 girls injected with delvosterone, which only last 6 weeks average, on mine.. but is relatively inexpensive.

HOWEVER someone has said that their vet has said not to use it because it causes fatty liver...

2 have had it to have a break, (though was thinking one was stopping)

With the age of my exbat now I am not sure that this is an issue.

Not that any of that helps answer, but 5 weeks,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,, maybe it was a faulty implant!

Hi Dolly

I just posted on another thread to say that Gladys passed away this evening. She's had the implant about 9-10 weeks ago. She ballooned up again in the last couple of days and the vet drained her but sadly she collapsed and died just after we got home. When I mentioned to the vet that I had expected the implant to last longer she said that it's now thought to last only about 3 months.

I am afraid that I am not sold by the Suprelorin implant. In dogs, the target species, it can last any time between 6 weeks to 6 months. In terms of using it for peritonitis, I had a hen with peritonitis, she was drained and had no other treatment, she naturally stopped laying and it was 8 months before it came back. Would I have given the implant credit for this had she had one
