Poorly chook - blood in poo

Recommended Posts

Hi guys, one of our chooks has been off colour for a few days ( paler comb, sits a lot and limping slightly ) but this evening I noticed that there are a couple of runny poos that also have traces of blood in them.

We worm with vermX every 3 months, they're on good quality layers pellets, grit and oystershell available at all times and they're treated to mixed corn in the afternoons as well as the odd treat of kitchen veggie peelings.

Any ideas what could be the issue - diet, worms, parasite, other ?????

And what do can we do?

Cheers.

Thanks Alli, figured it was going to be something serious and had guessed at maybe some form of worm / parasite that vermx not dealing with so am ordering some Flubenvet which seems to be more popular amongst the members here.

I'll take a look at the coccidia pages to see what's available.

Cheers.

If she is off colour with it I would be inclined to get her checked out by a vet - taking a poo sample will help. Blood in poo is not always as sinister as it looks but it could, coupled with signs of illness, be something requiring treatment such a cocci. If you have only ever used herbal supplements, I would advise worming with Flubenvet at some point soon and then every 3-4 months as a routine.

Thanks Chucky Mamma, I've got Flubenvet, Coxi water additive and diatom all on their way - hopefully we'll catch it in time.

Really sad as we thought we were well ahead of the game in terms of health, we clean and disinfect coop every week without fail, they have huge area to roam in and we use apple cider vinegar in their water as daily / weekly routine and then we've been worming every 3 months with VermX - Just goes to show, there's always something else to catch you out !

I would take it one step at a time as you don't want to bombard their systems with too many things at one time. Neither worms of cocci would make her lame and her being off colour may not be worm or parasite related. As they haven't been wormed yet perhaps worming with Flubenvet would be a good place to start but I have concerns that there is something else going on here. Is this chicken still laying and how old is she?
