Luvachicken Posted May 16, 2011 Share Posted May 16, 2011 Well, as I went to check on Matilda (in the egg area as usual) I noticed a very thin green poo in the poo tray with quite a bit of green water round it. I have heard people talking about various shades of green poos before, so I think it's normally fine One of my girls did really deep green poos before she died when she had an infection in her abdomen though I hope someone more knowledgable in poo can give you a better answer though. Salop Chuck Posted May 16, 2011 Share Posted May 16, 2011 My Australorp bantam, Sweetie, produced emerald green poos which was a bit alarming . Unfortunately my local vet knows very little about poultry so I tried to observe her closely before consulting with a vet. One thing I noticed is that Sweetie didn't appear to be eating very much - just standing around looking sleepy. Other hens were stopping her getting near the food and I read somewhere that green poos might be a sign of an undernourished hen who is passing partially digested bile. On the other hand green poos can also be a sign of a number of infections. Is Matilda still laying, is her abdomen swollen and is she walking with a waddle. Give her a full health check and observe her closely. If you take her to your vet then hopefully someone will have enought training and experience with poultry to guide you. Charlotte is the one who has been being sleepy, with her head tucked right under her feathers. Neither of them seem to be eating that much or doing that much. Matilda does have another little limp but I'm not sure that would make her poo funny. They don't seem to be suffering in any way, just rather inactive and not eating much. floradora Posted May 16, 2011 Share Posted May 16, 2011 Hi It sounds like your chickens aren't very well at all if they are not eating very much and are listless - I'm sure that green poo is not a good sign as well - it sounds like they have got some kind of infection, especially if one has a limp as well. Looks like a trip to the vet. I think Practical Poultry Forum (you have to register) has a collection of pictures of chicken poo to help everybody! Thankfully, I have not had to look at them yet! Luvachicken Posted May 16, 2011 Author Share Posted May 16, 2011 Thanks Molly333, they were wormed at the end of Feb so are almost due again, but I was discussing on here earlier about worming chickens that aren't eating much. I must admit things aren't looking too good at the moment, for either of them, and having one chicken put down last year because of peritonitis I'm not sure how far to let things go before doing that. I know there is not much hope of a cure for that and I don't have enough money for the vet to try and make things better when there is no cure......................
