madamding
I've noticed in the past few days the chickens have started eating their own eggs Is there any way to break this habit or am I done for? I've read about strengthening the shells so I will try that as well as darkening the nest boxes, although it's pretty dark in there as it is and we're trying to get the eggs out quickly, but when I work all day it's not very easy to do. Has anybody got any other advice?
Lavenders_Blue
Blow out a couple of the eggs, fill them with mustard and pop them back in the nest box. The culprit will think twice after having a munch on those. It worked a treat for me when one of my hens decided to start egg eating. Snowy
Or try a rubber egg (some hens have been known to take a liking to the mustard!)
stoice
Mine loved the mustard as much as the normal egg. I even tried chilli in an egg too but as you can buy chillied wild bird seed to deter squirrels I guess it has no effect. I bought a roll-away nest box in the end. (Same as mentioned here) You could make one if your handy. My Gladys, who was the egg eater, passed away so the problem stopped anyway.
