feeding goslings advice please....(pictures added)

Recommended Posts

OK, so they're not strictly chicks, but they;'re not ducks either so I can't post there! :D So the goslings are 4 days old and doing well so far. They like grass, they eat chick crumb, and of course they're not like chicks in that I don't leave marbles or stones in their water. In fact today I put a 1 1/2 inch deep pot tray in there and they went straight in!! They splashed about, dunked their heads, then stretched out their little winglets and ran like nutcases in laps round the shed - it was hysterical to watch!!:lol:

But to the point, is normal chickcrumb what they should be eating? Steep learning curve here obviously. I heard that they, like hens, go onto growers at about 6 weeks, presumably normal "hen" growers? So when would they move on to layers? I know I won't get any eggs this year so I don't want to overload them with layers pellets when they don't need them. And I did read that they should have wheat - well I scoured the farm food warehouse and couldnt find anything listed wheat in food sacks....

Any of you with geese able to help?

And just so you can go awwwwww....

We think Geraldine might actually be a Gerald, and Glorias foot is now fixed - she was born with her foot turned over walking on her ankle, but I micropore taped a bit of weetabix box to it (other ceral boxes are available!! ) and after two days it was fixed :)

I'm not too good on Geese but I'll have a go

I know ducks arent supposed to have medicated crumb so would imagine geese would be the same, plain chick crumb is fine though

after that I'd be tempted to move them on to standard growers pellets (again not medicated)

Then on to a mix of growers and wheat until they start laying

Then layers pellets and wheat

You can get duck and goose crumb and growers but I guess that depends on availability, cost, room for storage etc..

Most argi merchants will sell 'straight wheat' failing that I hear that there is a good supplier called Rokers somewhere in Surrey and I'd be surprised if they dont do it as they seem to be supplying most of Surreys poultry keepers

Very cute :D

My Geraldine ( duck ) turned out to be a Gerald too! ;)

Think they'll be fine on chick crumb for a few weeks, maybe need a bit more protein? and then I'd keep them on growers for a while longer than you would with chicks too - just 'cos I think calcium too early can be a bad thing and make them develop too soon.

You should be able to get wheat on its own - maybe try equine places by you. Just googled it and got this :D

Hi there, we have 2 new goslings age 2 days old. One was a bit slower off the mark, but has now caught up. I am not sure how right this is what I do, but it was all I had when they pipped and came out in short order! I crushed up some of our dogs kibble (no cereal in it but has veg/fruit etc) and added some bran, a bit of honey, some water and made a kind of sloppy soup thing. They scoffed it no problem. I also found some dry peas, and some wheat from feeding the adult geese, and gave that a blitz in the food processor and add some water to make it crumbly. They loved that too. I give them short pieces of grass and some of the weeds I would like them to eat!! I also steamed some nettles- high in protein and we have a good crop of them!!- and they ate that too, as did the ducklings and the dogs!

Husband has gone out today to get some growers pellets for all the hatchlings but mainly I concoct feed from what there is around at the moment.
