Smart Feeder - Light sensor values

Hey all,

 

Our new chooks are spending a fair amount of time in their Eglu during the day - snoozing I guess. They rush out in the morning and gobble down some pellets, then they are in and out all day, sometimes disappearing for an hour or so. No signs of anything wrong though, so I'm hoping this is natural. Do yours do this?

Ours use to do that. Don't worry, they'll grow out of it when they get older.

 

You'll probably find that they stop doing it for a while, but as they get to egg-laying age, they may have the odd 'practice' before starting to lay eggs.

Oh, that's great - I have an image in my head now of them settling down in the nesting box and wiggling around, trying to figure it all out

our new chickens often run in the eglu if something scary comes (ie me...) in the WIR, and they also seem to be practising laying, they go in / out/ sit and read the newspaper for a while? / come out and pretend they've laid an egg and sometimes I think they are just playing follow the leader - if one goes in they all go in!

That sounds eggsactly right teacake. This afternoon I sat out there for a while as they went in and out and trashed the nesting box. Well, I guess keeping chickens was never going to be a tidy exercise.

our boss hen likes a good sit down and read of the paper when she lays an egg (up to an hour). Mind you, she's a big burly, almost blokey hen.

Our boss hen also sits in there forever,(knitting) then there's an almighty screeching and clucking - announcing the arrival of said egg noisy bird.
