Eggstravaganza
Morning My Ginger Ranger has a totally different beak to the Mrs Pepperpots. Her lower beak is much much longer than the top and it's all fairly rounded. I've just looked at the Ginger Ranger picture on the Omlet site and their one has the pointy beak with the top beak going over the top. I've just googled it and it talked about beak trimming. I'm now wondering if Ginger Spice was a bit of a bully and therefore had her beak trimmed or if this is totally normal? She looks like she is constantly sticking her bottom lip out bless her. She has shown no signs of bullying since arriving here.
Henchanted
Hello read this interesting debate about debeaking - http://www.all-creatures.org/articles/egg-debeaking-rh.html I confess my first hens came debeaked and it was not something I was prepared for. Sadly, though controversial, it is a legal practice to debeak/trim young birds, bully or not.
Eggstravaganza
Well it looks like that's what's happened to her then. I feel a bit sad about that. It doesn't seem to stop her eating properly or anything though - she just looks a little odd. Interesting link by the way - thanks.

migsy
Quite a few of my hens beaks look like that. I thought it was normal.
Eggstravaganza
Ok - I don't feel quite as bad now. Thanks for liking their names Good Egg. Feel a bit guilty about one of the guinea pigs names now though. He was a little runt and called that by the breeder and it stuck. Perhaps I'll just call him Pie from now on. cheekymonkey200
that article was very interesting... "Chickens are relatively territorial, and once they are satisfied, they do not move around too much"...they move around more than an A4 piece of paper that's for sure...ridiculous defence of battery treatment! One of my girls has a funny shaped beak too, her lower beak is quite a lot longer than her top- i'm not sure she's been debeaked though, I think she's just wonky! Eggstravaganza
Yes that's what Ginger Spices is like - I might try and put a photo on later. Got to go to work first though

Duncan08
Our Bluebell had a longer bottom beak when she arrived, very sharp and pointy, especially when eating out of your hand! As she has matured the top beak has caught up and they are both the same now.
Lavenders_Blue
Many hens are routinely beak trimmed as day olds at the hatchery. Commercial hens (except organic) will pretty much be guaranteed to be beak trimmed. It's not nice, but it won't cause her any problems, she'll just be a pouty girl! bostock422
more than likely they would of been de-beaked, this is where they get a laser and cut the tip of the top beak when they're day old chicks and it falls off after 2 weeks, this prevents severe pecking when over crowded.
