Heidi-Hi
Hi, meet Lavender, she is 2.5 weeks old. Could anyone guess what breed she might be? She came from the chicken farm together with a white orpington chick, and a Plymouth Barred Rock. Many thanks!
Heidi-Hi
I should add that I keep talking about the chick as a 'her' and 'she', but I suppose it could be a 'him'

chicken bark
Is it smaller than the others? Looks a bit like a booted bantam. Of course I have got those on the brain at the moment! Lavender Pekin?
Heidi-Hi
I just googled both the booted bantam and lavender pekin, and I would propably go for the pekin. My sister-in-law went to get them. She has got two at her house, and they are from the same brood and much bigger. Mine is only tiny compared to hers. Does that possibly mean mine could be a girl? chicken bark
I was able to sex my Pekins at 3 weeks ish. Boys combs go redder earlier. From the photo (which is never completely reliable as you know) I'd say girl. Lucky you. I hatched 2 Lavender Pekins are they were both boys. Still I've got more eggs in the incy. Heidi-Hi
I think I have been very lucky with the chicks. The story goes like this... Me and my SIL (she's got 13 chooks already and I have 11 ) went to the chicken farm the other day... I came back with a lovely white silkie and a white orpington (which has gone back now, because she got sick and was under warranty ) and SIL got an Appenzeller and two other mixed breeds. Just got home from the chicken farm and sorted the chooks out and was sitting in the garden enjoy a nice cold Diet Coke (as you do ) and we realised that our new chickens eggs would be fertile as they were in with a boy So we collected our first eggs and she put them in her brooder. And voila... 21 days later, out of 6 eggs that went in, one of my silky x frizzle eggs hatched and one of her Appenzeller x dont know what!? hatched too. So, in order for my little chickie called Ella (her mum is Bella, very original I know, and that is presuming she is a girl!) needed some company in her big box in my kitchen. So my SIL went back to the nice lady at the chicken farm and came home with arms full of lovely little chicks. Since she went, she got to pick hers first... and I got the three left over. Turns out it looks like she picked mostly cockerels and I've got the hens Anyway, my husband said - ABSOLUTELY NOT, YOU ARE NOT KEEPING THEM ALL!!! We agreed that if Ella is a girl she can stay, but the rest must go. If they are cockerels, the lady at the farm will take them back, if they are hens, they got to go to my SIL... Well, little does he know that if my little Lavender is a girl, there is no way she is going anywhere! Uh, and the same with Plymouth, the Plymouth Barred Rock, from what I can tell is definately a girl . I am also convinced that Daisy the white orpington chick is a girl - 4 weeks old and almost no comb yet, nevermind any red wattles or comb! However, if she is a girl she will definately go to SIL, as I just don't have the space! Best be extra nice to hubby... when is the fishing season starting? chicken bark
Next time I want any chicks/hatching eggs I'll take you with me - you have the lucky touch! Great to have a SIL on side too. Your poor hubby.
Redwing
I'd also say lavender Pekin and agree that it looks female The Plymouth rock should be reasonably easy to sex but orpingtons are really tricky if you dont have another to compare it to, it could be weeks before you can be sure
Heidi-Hi
but orpingtons are really tricky if you dont have another to compare it to, it could be weeks before you can be sure Oh, it's just from what I could find on the internet. I found some pictures with 4 week old orpingtons where the boys has little wattles and red combs already and the girls just looked like mine. I will try not to put my hopes up yet
