pekin off colour

Recommended Posts

Hi all, well it was all going so well... Now i have a poorly pekin and a broody hen. The hen is in the broody cage, how long should i keep her in there? She is not a happy bunny but i had to do it as the others couldnt use the nesting box and the eggs were getting broken. Then there is little lucy the pekin bantam. I have had her about a month and she has started to lay. Wormed with flubenvet 3 weeks ago and so far has been fine. She fr in the garden every day. Since yesterday she has been very quiet and not doing much. Pecking at the grass but not really interested in pellets. her crop felt soft, am thinking maybe sour crop ? Just been through this with another hen. Will try yoghurt but Will take her to the vets tomorrow if no improvement. So worried ,she is such a darling. :(

Lucy may have blocked her crop with grass so its all backing up which in turn can lead to sour crop (although the two things can be independent) bring her in and keep her in a box with no food or water after 8pm or so this evening then look at her crop in the morning to see if it has gone down at all, this will probably decide the course of action

Hi again, checked lucy tonight and her crop feels hard. Gave her some olive oil and massaged it. She is still not right obviously, in the morning should i put her in my puppy cage with just water, or should i give her some pellets aswell? I gave her some yoghurt with bokashi today as i thought it was sour crop, now it seems impacted should i not give it to her? Would it worth trying white maggots and is it ok to give them to pekins? Sorry for all the questions, just want to make her better. :( Thankyou for your time.

I would after several days and not improving. Maggots are said to be effective eating through a blockage and your pekin wouldn't try it unless she could manage them. I wouldn't give bran because it swells.

Hope for some good news soon.
