redhotchick
Dolce, my sweet little red hen, died in the past week, leaving Bella alone. I plan to get another 2, but will have to organise housing and feeders for introductions, as well as sourcing the chickens. I've never been to The Wernlas Collection but I'm up that way in 3 weeks time, I couldn't do anything now until next weekend anyway (maybe?), this would mean Bella is alone for a further 2 weeks, if I wait to go to Wernlas. Would this be too long for her to be alone? I've only got back from holiday today and I've been watching her. She appears to be in good health. GeorgieB
Sorry to hear about Bella. We're in the same position in that we're now down to just one hen. Maybe get a couple of ex-batts to keep her company. That way you could do a good deed at the same time and Bella probably won't have to wait so long for company then. We're gonna get a couple more and I can't wait cos our hen (Pokey) is looking so lonely now.
Leicester_H
Oh dear - sorry to hear that. From experience and what I've read, it really does depend on the chicken. When I was in exactly the same situation, my one remaining chicken got very down (wouldn't come out of eglu) after a few days. Others have reported OK for a few weeks. So I'd advise giving her LOTS of attention and getting some friends as soon as you can - Good luck with the introductions ! (hope you have an easier time than me!!) cathybc
My last girl has been on her own for ver a year and is fine - but this seems to be an exceptional case
GeorgieB
Hi Cathy, I don't suppose you want any more hens do you? Ex-batts that is. I know that a battery farm in Wigan (approx 40 mins from you) is closing down and all the hens will be slaughtered unless homes are found. Sadly, it's highly unlikely that they will find homes for all of them as there are 10,000! The rescue is mid July and the lady in charge (who just gave me 4 today) is Sophie McCoy. Her email address if you're interested is - sophiemccoy@hotmail.com She would probably deliver them to you herself too. No pressure anyway, just thought I'd mention it
redhotchick
Hi GeorgieB, I've not checked my posts for a while. Sorry. Have you posted elsewhere about these exbatts? Is a rescue organisation informed and involved? How can people be made more aware of these chickens? Wigan isn't very far from me at all. Cathybc, Bella seems to be very happy by herself. It's only been a few weeks so far. I would like to get more chickens, but moving house and general lack of support is putting me off. Leicester_H
Hi Try this http://www.bhwt.org.uk/cms/re-home-some-hens/ I very nearly adopted some (but events got in the way) - they seem a very responsible organisation to me. H

Sophie does a lot for the BHWT and I believe they will try and help her with the Wigan rescue.
