chickens- rented property???

Recommended Posts

I hope i'm not in any trouble but I have 2 chickens and live in a rented house. Its a housing assosiation property and to I never gave it a thought when I got my chickens. I did ring my local council who said it was not a problem so I just assumed it would be ok. Now my friend who keeps lots of chickens but owns her home has told me that she read an article where a tennant had to fight to keep her chickens.

I dont know if I should ring and ask is it ok, bit late now though or to now live in fear of them finding out.

My neighbours are happy I have them, they are quiet and I clean them everyday. I'm so worried now. I couldn't bare to part with them, they really cheer me up, make me get up at stupid o'clock to let them out and I do enjoy them. They make me smile everyday.

What would you do? ask or keep quiet?

Thanks

Thank You. I have looked in the tennency agreement and it says that any pet needs written permision but I have asked my neighbours did they get permission for their dog and 2 cats and they said no. I have been told that there is an allotments act that states anyone can keep chickens. I will have to look into it.

Thank you for taking the time to reply, Julie.

The allotments act only seems to apply where there is no house attached to the land in question

Personally I'd keep quiet, you can always plead ignorance then, if no one is bothered then no one is likely to complain after all :D if you ask and arent allowed to keep them you will worry and it would be harder to plead ignorance if the worst does happen

Hi, you might find it useful to have a read through my thread here http://club.omlet.co.uk/forum/viewtopic.php?f=5&t=77962(sorry just tried to do link and it hasn't worked - I'm sure someone will be along to insert it for me!) I have a convenant on my deeds specifically prohibiting poultry. However when I spoke to the council they said they wouldn't be interested in pursuing it and it would be up to my neighbours if they have a problem. So we have decided to go ahead and get them (after speaking with next door) and risk it. I think with housing association unless it states chickens, I wouldn't worry too much, especially if you already have them :)
