Semi-Broody Hen?

Recommended Posts

Lottie is normally the last in the nest box in the mornings, and stays in there for about 1 hour (a lot longer than everyone else). She acts broody when you open the side opening (fluffing her feathers up and making a cat-like screeching noise). As she is last in the nest box, there are usually 3 eggs already in there (i try to take them out sooner, but as there is always a queue, I can't get them in time!).

I am also sure she is mentally challenged, as she is not the brightest of chickens, and also doesnt crouch as normal. Instead of 'crouching', she stands up and walks backwards a bit. I think she may be broody, and then just gets fed up of sitting on the eggs, or either she just likes to take her time and doesnt like to be disturbed!

I had a half hearted broody for a few weeks.

She would stay in the nest box all day, until I went to chuck some mealworms, veg, or any other treat in the pen, then she would fly out in a flash!! Then maybe a little while later trot back in there again and sit on any eggs, in any box! But same thing happened everyday, there was NO Way she was getting any eggs to half heartedly sit on!!

I forgot to add that shes doing it as night as well! everyone else is too scared to go in the house with her, so we have to take her out of the nest box. When we put her down, she just lays on the ground (unless shes just seen some food, of course!)

I took her out of the nest box just now, and she still hasnt laid her egg. I've shut her in the WIR (which the house isnt in, so she cant go back in). Would it be best to take her out of the nest box every hour, and if she hasnt laid, shut her out of the house?

Also, when I take her out of the house and put her on the gravel, she just stays there (unless there are treats!), and starts building a nest by getting pieces of straw, twigs etc around her!
