Hi

I am a sort of newcomer to the forum, I have been reading the forum for sometime but have now decided that I should register and start posting.

We have kept chickens for 4 years now, we started with four girls in an eglu cube and have expanded so that we now have 5 girls in a cube and 4 bantams in a elgu.

Anyway we are looking to buy two more girls and quite like the look of Faverolles and I was wondering if anyone had any experience of these?

Also we are looking at buying them from Mini Meadows - has anyone got any experience of buying from them in the past?

Thanks in advance

Hi and welcome.

No experience of your seller but I have two Faverolles and now also 3 Fav chicks. They are fantastic birds - very friendly and make a lovely noise - instead of Bok bok bok it is a sort of wot wot wot. Brilliant choice. Laying is quite good and the cuddles are very good. :)

Faverolles are quite a timid breed and easily bullied by others, especially so as their beard hinders their eyesight

I've heard lots of good things about mini meadows but someone posted in here the other day that they know of at elast one batch of birds that have been bought in to resell which isnt so good when they claim to breed their birds :? the 50 or so 'rare breeds' on the website are mostly easily available birds too so dont get stung on price

but all things considered they seem to have a good set up so go and take a look and if the birds are happy and healthy then go for it

We have a Salmon Favorelle that we bought from Mini Meadows. I had no idea that they buy birds in to sell and if that is the case I have to say it would put me off going there again, although we did buy 4 different breeds from them and all have been fine so far.

Our Favorelle is a beauty, despite being feather plucked by one of our ex batts. They have such a gentle manner about them and don't mind being picked up and I have to say out of all our pure breeds she is my favourite. So far, touch wood, she hasn't gone broody, unlike our Welsummer :?

Hi

Thank you for all the responses, they have been really helpful, I think I am pretty sold on a pair of Faverolles, I've done a bit of research on them and your responses have backed it up nicely. They do sound as adorable as they look.

Thanks for the points about mini meadows - we are going to visit this weekend so I'll see what they are like.

Does anyone know of any other good breeders of faverolles? We are in the Midlands but don't mind travelling a little.

Thanks again

Toddy Hamilton Gould in Bicester has some nice large fowl Favs - she usually sells some at the annual RBST sale (set prices not an auction) in Brackley which is on 19th June this year, I bought one for £15 there a couple of years ago

Do look at mini meadows though, I hear the chap is very nice and certainly haven't heard of any welfare problems there which is very positive considering that it's a problem some other large scale set ups have :) Favs aren't arare breeds don't pay 'rare breed' prices for one!
