beach chick
ok horse owners, any advice please? my friend has (had) a horse, which was being housed at her boyfriend's place. she was paying rent/food, insuring the horse etc. she and boyfriend have now split up; in a fraught moment during a row he said he wanted the horse and would keep her; she said "ok then keep her". (bad move I think). ex boyfriend now has the horse, all the tack, rugs, etc etc etc, has changed its passport into his name - without her having to sign anything which sounds odd to me? and has told numerous people it is his horse now. she is in 2 minds: the horse could probably be sold on for about 3k (which she could badly do with). on the other hand, she is no longer paying anything for said horse. if she just leaves the situation as it is, is there any potential come-back - I am thinking legal ownership of horse, if it jumps out of its field and causes damage etc etc. or, if she does want it back (and we could have it here FOC) is there anything she can do to reclaim it? scarlettohara
I've always needed a signed letter to change passport.
beach chick
that's what I'dve thought Scarlett, I am thinking he's forged her signature. she says she has checked all online passport information and there is now no record of this horse in her name. I dont know anything about horse passports; but it sounds odd to me. I very much doubt he has insurance etc, so if the horse should escape, cause damage etc I think she would probably still be liable.
Redwing
I would recommend that if she doesn't want to claim thehorse she draws up a gift receipt and asks her ex to sign so it officially becomes his horse and your friend walks away with no money but no liability If she wants the horse she should investigate the passport problem and take steps to claim the horse andget it away to a new place and have all her documents in order as no prospective buyer would want to get involved with the situation as it stands I don't think leaving the situation as it is will help - the longer she leaves things the more leverage he will have to say that she didnt object to him taking the horse on. 'free' livery could cost her dear
