Pepperpot losing feathers + diarrhoea

Recommended Posts

Hi,

Not really sure what is going on with my Pepperpot. She has lost a lot of feathers from her underside and has diarrhoea. Don't think she is moulting as I think all mine moulted just before christmas. Her feathers seem to be broken rather than falling out whole :?

My 3 original girls were all laying but recently I have only been getting one egg a day? Really confused! The other 2 seem fine with no feather loss.

Any ideas?

Thanks

First question

Has she been wormed recently with flubenvet or panacure?

If no that would be my first thought.

Secondly, in my experience diarrhorea always means something... :( and worming will show fast improvement if it is that.

3rdly the obvious lets assume you already know she has not eaten lots of something to cause it.

Then I would personally pop a sample off for testing and go from there, unless you have a sick chook that should make a visit to the vet as 1st port of call.

All sorts of infections will result in drop of egg laying and runny tums.

Broken feathers can be a sign of mites, where the hen pulls her own feathers out due to irritation. Depluming mite could also be responsible. I would feed water and pellets only as Egluntyne has said and see how you get on. Make sure her crop is full in the evening and provide plenty of fresh water. Make sure you seen her drinking, as diarrhoea can lead to dehydration.

If no better in a day or so then a trip to the vet might be in order.

Hi, thanks for the replies.

I just started worming this week with flubenvet, although the feather loss started before that. I only ever give pellets and water with the occasional carrot peelings/sweetcorn etc. (normally weekly).

I clean my cube out regularly with a mite/dissinfectant spray and have never seen any sign of mites.

Hopefully when the worming is complete I will see some improvement. She seems fine otherwise.
