reneepren
I lost my broody hen Baroness, a lovely Cuckoo Maran who laid fabulous terra cotta colored eggs. She was just over a year old and one of my favorite hens. I had been concerned about her broody behavior and broke her of it finally by putting large frozen jugs of ice in the nest box at night for three days. I was worried about her spending too much time in the cube when it is so hot. After she stopped being broody about a week ago, she still spent more time off alone sitting in the shade, but yesterday she stopped running for treats so I brought her in the house to a large dog crate and nursed her forcing fluids with a baster. She died during the night. I am so sad. I will try to console myself that at least she had a lovely life with lots of free ranging, good friends, and a shady garden with organic fruits, herbs, and veggies to pillage. reneepren
Thanks so much. Keep thinking about how tiny she was when she arrived with 6 other chicks in a small box from the post office. All that energy! A good life but so short and in her prime. Renee
Dolly
It's awful when they go and I know how you feel after losing my beautiful Lola this week, but what a wonderful life Baroness had with you, everything a little girl could want.
