Cleaning - ecover and dettol

Recommended Posts

Hello,

I've been using a bit of ecover to clean my eglu, and I'm wondering if it would be okay to give it a final wipe over with a bit of dettol? I'd like to avoid spending £7-8 on specialty sterilising solution if I can! Or do you think that a wash with ecover is enough?

Cheers,

Jen

I've only ever used Ecover washing-up liquid on mine - unless there's a real need for it, I'm not a big fan of disinfectants anywhere. I don't know the scientific detail but I think anything that goes cloudy in water is to be avoided round animals - I don't know what the constituent parts of Dettol are.

I think that Dettol also contains phenols which are what turns the water cloudy and are toxic to animals. I just use some total mite kill concentrate in the water as that disinfects and kills off lice/mites in one go. It doesn't foam though so aiI add a bit of BioD washing up liquid as I'm (daftly  ) convinced that things aren't clean unless there are bubbles.

It all gets a good scrubbing with a bucket brush, or a jet wash every few weeks.
