I had 3 little pekin bantam hens who were absolutely adorable and a joy to have. Unfortunately the crowing they made first thing in the morning was just too much for our neighbours so I had to rehome them. So, can anyone recommend a breed of bantam that is quiet? I have heard that Silkies are quiet, is this right? I am also looking at the possibility of ex batt hens as I have heard that these are quiet as well. Any help would be appreciated as I hate to see my hen house sitting empty.

Alas, Silkies can be quite noisy. It does vary from hen to hen, but one of mine in particular is a right roudy little Madam and sets all the others off. From other posts on here I believe that is the case with quite a few Silkies.

I don't know about ex bats being noisy or not, but they are not bantams and I have heard that it is a case of the bigger the hen the less noise she makes. I don't know how true that is but apparently Orps, who are lovely size 20+ girls are quiet beings.

I hate to be the bearer of bad news but I have 4 Orpington bantams and they can be very noisy.

The first noise is the whinging whilst they are building up to laying an egg, can go on for hours  , and then there is the alarm call when they have laid the egg.

Oh, and my Orpington head hen has decided recently that she rather likes to crow as well
