I have a bully in my flock of 4! She's just come into lay and decided she wants to be top chick I think. The others have bare bums and the bovans has been pecked and drawn blood (think ok, have treated).

I separated the bully columbian blacktail into a do grate right next to the others and all peaceful for now.

 

What to I do with her overnight? I was going to quietly put her into the cube at bed time and get her out early tomorrow again. Any suggestions? Is this ok or am I being stupid?!

 

Also, any opinions on beak trimming? My Breeder offered it but I have very mixed feelings: maybe the greater good for the others but at expense of Mrs Chicken (the blacktail - named by my 3 yr old!).

 

Any advice gratefully received....

Hi, the omlet shop are now selling bumper bits and the pliers you will need to fit them - this is a much better alternative to beak trimming as it is a temporary measure, still effective and allows the chicken to retain its beak - beak trimming is also actually painful for a chicken so it is sort of cruel imo. I'll post the link to the bumper bits in a second, there's also a sticky thread on bumper bits and how to fit them if you're interested.

Thanks Squiffs. Will def try bumper bits if isolation fails. Had serious misgivings about the beak trimming, so this is a far preferable alternative if nothing else works!

Generally with large amounts of hens intended for laying they trim the beaks as standard
