When to introduce new cockerel to hens?

Recommended Posts

My 3 Ancona chicks (2 boys and a girl) have really grown up now, they are now 10 weeks old. One of the cockerels has become very dominant, and I need to separate him from the other cockerel and the hen.

My plan is to keep one cockerel and one hen as a pair and possibly breed them later on, and to put the remaining cockerel with my original flock of 7 girls.

My question is, when should I introduce my Ancona cockerel to my original flock?

All replies welcome :D

It would be much easier if you waited for him to mature, that way he will wade right in and take over

If you introduce him before the females will run rings around him but in saying that they dont tend to bully cockerels in the same way they do other females, you could probably safely start to introduce him at about 16 weeks

My cockerel Onion, was from last years hatch, he joined the flock when he was about 18 wks and slowly worked his way up the pecking order. He is general top chook, but my Legbar Tikka won't become his 'wife' and chases him like mad when he makes his 'proposals'
