Large eggs, small hen - should I be worried?

Recommended Posts

Hi

Our Gingernut Ranger Sage isn't a big hen, but over the last few weeks she's consistently laying rather large eggs usually weighing close to 100g - it's not huge in terms of the Large Egg Leaderboard I know, but for her size, and when compared with the eggs from our other much larger hen, they're huge.

I know some hens lay the odd big one, but all of Sage's are now this size, they aren't double-yolkers, usually only a single yolk and lots of white. When this started she was laying one only every other day but this last week or so she's been producing one of these big ones every single day. For a few days they did also have little 'warts' or 'bubbles' of extra shell on them, and had almost a crinkled look being crazed with fine lines, but this seems to have sorted itself out and they're now fairly smooth.

I'm a bit concerned that this is going to harm her :anxious: , should I be worried? Is there anything I should do, or even can do, to try and get the eggs back to normal?

They're both fed on Wiggly Wigglers Layers Mash with Bokashi, or the Omlet Chicken Feed, with a treat of mixed corn or mealworms later on in the afternoon, and they have mixed grit freely available in the run.

Any replies would be much appreciated!

Update to this is that yesterday she'd laid a softie (I know it was Sage as their eggs are different and Onion had laid normally) and there was also something separate that looked like it might have been the shell.

There definitely seems to be something odd going on with Sage's egg production. Any ideas?

Would really be grateful for some replies, even it 's just to reassure that I shouldn't be worrying!
