Help! Hen vent pecked away

Recommended Posts

I have a 5 month old pullet that apparently got pecked very badly at her vent before I caught it. I found her scabbed and pasted. It took over a week of bathing, cleaning several times a day and care. She is healing up now, but it looks like her vent was pecked away so much it is no longer shaped as it should be. The scabs are all but gone. Her vent is more open and her elimination kinds of leaks out. I am worried the skin will never grow back and we'll have to keep her separated or get rid of her. Has anyone else had this problem?

BTW, she is not laying eggs yet.

Did she see a vet and have any reconstructive surgery when it happened? I would very much doubt that the tissue will remodel and return to a 'normal' shape. You will have to make sure that she doesn't get fly strike during warm weather and may also need to use vaseline around that area to stop scalding.

UPDATE: The hen grew her feathers back while inside a box in the house, then we put her back in the coop. She just stays inside the coop all day, on a perch mostly, while the other chickens go outside. But, she is fine. The tissue never grew all the way back, but healed and I don't think she's laid any eggs yet, so we'll see how that goes when the time comes. She is most likely delayed from all the protein needed to produce a new set of feathers.
