It's going mad!

Recommended Posts

Hi,

I had 5 chicks hatch in the incubator on Friday which were moved to the brooder on Saturday, but very badly planned by me I had my last chick hatch today by itself in the incubator (I put it in 3 days late as I wanted to fill the incubator up but my girls hadn't laid enough when I needed them - and I hadn't really thought any would hatch as Georgie Porgie the cockerel doesn't really look up to the job :) ) but now it's hatched and got it's breath back it's going absolutely mad cheeping and walking around.

I don't know what to do with her/him. It was hatched at just before lunchtime today so isn't dry so really should leave it in the incubator until tomorrow but feel it's going mad as it's lonely and can prob hear the other chicks. Should I leave it there tonight or move it? Also will the others try and attack it as it's younger and not one of them? Boy why didn't I think about these issues when I put the eggs in  !

I would have left one or two of the older chicks in the incubator if the difference had only been a day or so but couldn't really with a 3 day gap. I don't know if I'm just fussing about nothing and all will be well in the morning but currently I am listening to him chirping and it's so desperate x

Any advice please x

You need to let the little thing dry, and then bite the bullet and put it in with the others. It's always stressful doing this, as I know when I've done it I'm always nervous that the poor latecomer will get picked on. It's usually OK though, and you don't really have an alternative (it's better than leaving latey on his own).

Thanks, well I had to leave 'pen' in until the next day and then put him in with his brothers and sisters - he was so tired and sounded like he had a sore throat! But they all went quiet and were really settled when I put him in! It was like they had been calling to him - making him more desperate. So it went well and now we are 3 weeks down the line and all are well - and pen who was called penny looks like a boy now :( shame as he is very pretty!
