Hattie Posted July 21, 2011 Share Posted July 21, 2011 Hi All I'm very new to chicken keeping and have just had my first chick hatch this morning, my broody hen has been sitting on 5 eggs and I can hear one of the other eggs 'peeping' so I'm hoping for more news later today. I'm not sure what to do with the egg shells that are left when the chicks hatch. Should I remove them or will Louise (broody hen) sort them out. Hope the others hatch ok for you. its so exciting and lovely to use a broody hen as she does all the hard work for you! Welcome to the forum by the way! Hattie Posted July 21, 2011 Author Share Posted July 21, 2011 Thank You I've been down to take Louise some fresh water, and there are 2 eggs with tiny holes in them and they are chirping away, I really didn't think I would get any chicks as I just popped 5 eggs under her from my other hen's as she had stopped laying and 21 days later we got chicks! Our cockerel is called Eric and he is a 10 month old New Hampshire, he's so handsome, I cannot wait to see what the chicks will turn out like, we have 2 Isa warrens Thelma & Louise, and an Old Speckled hen called Speckle, so I don't even know who's eggs Louise has been sitting on. No, you've not done anything wrong, don't worry. You can only include pictures within posts after you have made a certain number of posts on the forum. I'm not sure what that number is, but as soon as you reach it, your pictures will show . Hattie Posted July 24, 2011 Author Share Posted July 24, 2011 Thank you The 3 chicks are doing fine, Louise moved the 2 unhatched eggs away from her and when I looked in on her yesterday they were cold so I took them out, I'm guessing that she knew they weren't going to hatch. I brought a small run yesterday and I'm hoping the weather warms up this afternoon then I can get Louise and the chicks out, while I give the shed a good clean out.
